I work as a deputy director in the Main Library of the Technical University of Lodz, Poland. I also wear a second hat, which is to be a Project Manager (or actually a Systems Librarian) for an automation project for 10 academic libraries in Lodz. This big project is supported by the A.W.Mellon Foundation. My responsibilities in the library include supervision over the organization and developing and maintaining all library services related to the use of technology (library automation system, networking, CD-ROM networking, Internet access etc.).

I can be reached at blzferet@library.p.lodz.pl

Hello,

Writing these words in the middle of the second module of the first year might seem too early to give the final opinion about the school and the teaching process. However, I have to say that what I have learned so far (and what I expect to learn during next modules) is extremely useful to me. The scope of topics covers all the most important aspects of work in a contemporary library. Learning about marketing instead of cataloging may seems to be a herecys to some old-fashioned librarians, but in the age of computers and competition in the field of access to information the overall "behavior" of libraries must change. The changes have to reflect the needs of users, so that they will still want to use libraries. Not only as a place where they can get the information they need, but also the place where they will find it easily, with a help of competent and cultural staff, and in a user-friendly conditions. The perfect knowledge of cataloging rules is then not the most important to create such an environment.

I would like to encourage those of you who are considering applying to ICIMSS. You will meet great people, have a fantastic time, and learn enough to "stop the Sun and put the Earth into motion" in your library... After all, Torun is city of Copernicus :-)

Blazej
